Small dealerships usually have lots of cars in that price range. You'll get a better deal if you look at private party sales though. Check the newspaper and craigslist. Do not settle for a 'car that runs.' For $5k you should be able to get a decent economy type car that isn't really old. Make sure you have a mechanic check out whatever you pick though to make sure it's not a lemon.

Try craigslist, try a local swap meet for cars. You can go to the local Municipalities auction. Just be careful with those as there is a minimum price on the warranty. In other words they will guarantee it isn't a total lemon for like a week that amount is usually 500 bucks, so look them over before the sale and don't go over the cash in hand. Good Luck
